Homework.png

Maths and English homework will be set every Friday.

Weekly homework expectation

  • Reading books with reading diary signed three times (minimum) weekly.
  • Spelling Shed assignment weekly
  • Maths Shed assignment weekly
  • Book Bingo task weekly

We recommend 15 minutes daily reading and 45 - 60 minutes completing other tasks across the week.

Spelling Shed:

We use Spelling Shed at the juniors – spellings are set every Friday and children can access the games any time throughout the week/weekend. We’ve found this to be a successful tool in making the teaching and learning of spellings more ‘fun’.

Maths Shed:

Very similar to Spelling Shed (and uses the exact same log-in details), we use Maths Shed to reinforce learning that has taken place during the week. It will be assigned weekly, on a Friday and again, we have found this to be a success in Year 3 last year.

Times tables:

Being fluent in times tables up to 12 x 12 is essential to support mathematical understanding. By the end of Year 3 children are expected to be fluent in 2x, 5x, 10x, 4x, 8x, and 3x tables. As a school we subscribe to Times Table Rockstars which again is another game to motivate children to become a Rock Hero – in Year 3, we use this website sometimes in the computer suite and it is accessible from home should your child wish to keep rocking into the evening!

Book Bingo:

Book Bingo is a task to be completed each week and handed in on a Friday to be marked by one of our fabulous Teaching Assistants.

The bingo card looks like this:

Only one task needs to be completed and crossed off each week. When a child completes a ‘LINE’ or a ‘FULL HOUSE’ we like to reward them with a little sweet treat or even dojos!

Your child can present their work as creatively as they wish to by writing the date, the name of the activity and then evidence of what they have done. In previous years children have taken photographs and glued them in, drawn pictures and written sentences. The possibilities are endless.

Reading expectations

Reading:

Home reading is essential and should be completed per week.  Reading records should be brought into school daily but will be checked by a Teaching Assistant on a Friday – a comment will be written so that you know an adult has reviewed your child’s reading for that week.

Accelerated Reader:

Your child will complete an assessment on the computers in school, this checks their reading skills and their comprehension skills. Once analysed, the system then suggests a point scale which enables us to give them a reading book that is appropriate and accessible for their stage.

For example if your child receives a ZPD score of 1.8 – 2.2, we would show them in our library where to choose their books from.

Once your child has read their school reading book, they are to take a ‘quiz’ on the AR website by logging in using the log-in details we have provided. If your child passes the quiz, they can come into school and change their book for another on the same level. If they do not pass the quiz, they must let their teacher know.

Quizzes can be accessed from home and in school – this is a great way for you to keep tabs on your child’s understanding of what they read.
